Ecosystem Services
Ecosystems provide for a vast wealth of services that humans make use of. Although difficult to quantify, experts agree the value of Ecosystem Services every year exceeds the Gross National Product of the entire human economy ($88 Trillion).
Natural Capital
All parts of the natural world that produce Ecosystem Services can be considered Natural Capital -- the forests, oceans, grasslands, mineral deposits, etc. The 2005 Millenium Ecosystem Assessment found that every year $3 to $5 trillion worth of Natural Capital is degraded or destroyed by human activity. This is a devastating loss of nature, and an illogical loss of value.
Thriving Ecosystems
Over extended time, degraded ecosystems will bounce back. However, we can intervene to speed up regeneration and prevent complete collapse. The investment made to improve Natural Capital will return better Ecosystem Services, and increased value.

The New York Stock Exchange, in partnership with the Intrinsic Exchange Group, have created a new asset class -- the Natural Asset Company. NACs allow investors to invest in the value of Natural Capital, and receive some of the benefits of regenerating degraded ecosystems.
